We ventured to Table Mountain in Cape Town, on our first day. We rode a gondola, with a rotating floor, up to the top of the mountain. The view of the surrounding area, from the top of the mountain, was amazing!
We traveled to Robben Island and toured the maximum security prison, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. It was very interesting to be guided around by a previous prisoner, as he had met Mandela and described his experiences. Pictured above are our tour guide and Mandela’s cell.
For two nights during our time in Cape Town, each of the youth stayed with another youth, at a South African family’s home. These families were from one of the two churches we were partnered with (Eternal Flame and St. Martin’s). They were so nice to welcome us into their homes and we learned so much about the South African culture, from them.
